Here are a few things I now know from experience:
1. When we focus on what we have to give instead of what there is to get we realize our value.
2. Fear is not your biggest obstacle. Ego is. Its need to be right armors you from your relatability and humanity.
3. Done is better than perfect.
4. Be an inquisitor to what’s going on underneath your exterior so you can stop running from it and projecting it on others.
5. Drama is what happens when scared and unaware people need attention.
6. Never malign anyone. Others won’t trust you.
7. Regret is only constructive if you make peace and move on.
8. Fear based leadership avoids risk, seeks to blame, and kills cultures.
9. Curiosity and compassion take humility.
10. There is power in having your boss’s back. Find a way to do that or go somewhere you can. Don’t stay and poison yourself and the culture.
11. Good people leave organizations because of bad managers who don’t position them to learn and advance. Mediocre people leave organizations for $1 more an hour, free lunch and a pool table in the break room.
12. ‘A’ people hire ‘A’ people, ask for their insight and get out of their way. ‘B’ people hire ‘C’ people and micromanage them.
13. Emotional leaders hardly ever advance. Practice a good poker face while you work on self-acceptance.
14. Narcissistic leaders thrive on keeping their teams in chaos and fear so that nobody notices their own ineptness. Stay off their radar screen by making sure they know you have their back, giving them all the glory and presenting your work with confidence so they can trust it.
15. When we can look ourselves in the eye and not expect to be perfect, we give ourselves room to be human and walk in the shoes of others. When we try on a lot of different shoes, we become grateful that they are not all the same size.
16. Executive presence is the ability to observe yourself from a third-party perspective and like what you see.
17. Confidence builds with taking risks – especially the ones that scare you the most. So, start.
18. Boundaries are imaginary lines between what you will and will not allow. Start drawing them around your well-being.
19. Lack of time is simply a lack of boundaries between what is on your list of goals and what is not. Say, "No" more often.
20. Goals should have a timeline and a method of measure. If they don't, they are notions.
21. Untangle the difference between what is true and what is an assumption. It melts stress.
22. A deep breath and a count of 30 will always create a clearing. It’s then your choice to walk down the path.
23. Anticipate situations before they happen. Craft and communicate a strong vision. Execute and measure.
24. Solid relationships take consistency, time and consideration.
25. Know your signature strength. Position it to make a measurable difference and repeatedly communicate those team accomplishments to people of influence.
26. Surround yourself with people who have your weaknesses as their strengths and get out of their way.
27. Telling people what to do turns them off. Story telling engages.
28. Nothing lasts forever. Make this moment count. Have no expectations. Only observation. Act on what matters. Smile. Life is pretty cool.
Mostly, continue to be curious about yourself and others. There is so much there of interest to the world.
